Horrendous gas mileage aside, a family of five could love this Land Rover LR4 on a long trip. It's a soft, leathery oasis inside, with separate climate controls in back, a cushioned air-suspension ride and moonroofs for all three rows of seats. Plus, it can drive through almost anything, should the trip include a desert rock crawl. It drives better than the pricier and smaller Range Rover Sport, and its boxy frame looks like it would have no trouble trekking from Cairo to Cape Town — or, in reality, from New York to the summer lake house.
