Canon will unveil two new small chip HD camcorders that will replace its existing XA10 line, next week during the NAB Show in Las Vegas. They are aimed at documentary and indie filmmakers, as well as newsgathering.

The XA20 and XA25—with similar size and weight to the XA10—includes a 1/2.84-inch CMOS sensor, support for 1080p at 60 frames per second, and an OLED touch panel. The difference between the two new models is that the XA25 has an HD SDI port.

“For the production environment—especially multicamera shoots—the ability to get HD SDI out of the camera is going to be very helpful. The XA20 will help people save money if they are not in that situation and are looking for a quick run and gun unit,” said Canon’s technical advisor Chuck Westfall.

Delivery date and pricing were not finalized at press time. The current XA10 model lists for $2,000.

Canon also announced that it is in development on a new Cinema EOS prime lens with a 35mm focal length and EF mount. It can be used with the EOS C100, C300, C500 or 1DC cameras.
